Tree Pose
Standing on one leg with the other foot placed against the inner thigh. The classic test of balance, and a surprisingly quick way to find out how settled the mind is on any given day.

Meaning of the name
Vṛkṣa is a tree. A tree is not rigid — it is rooted and it sways, which is exactly the instruction.
How to practise
- 1
Stand in Tadasana. Shift the weight onto the left foot and find a fixed point to gaze at, level with the eyes.
- 2
Bend the right knee and place the sole of the right foot against the inner left thigh, above or below the knee — never on the knee itself.
- 3
Press foot and thigh into each other, and let the right knee open out to the side.
- 4
Bring the palms together at the chest, or raise the arms overhead once steady.
- 5
Hold for 30 seconds to a minute, then change sides. The sway is not a mistake.
Benefits
- Develops balance, coordination and ankle stability — significant in preventing falls in later life
- Strengthens the standing leg, hip and the small stabilising muscles of the foot
- Sharpens concentration; the pose is impossible while distracted
- Opens the hips and stretches the inner thigh
- Builds patience, since progress is visibly gradual
