Jal Shamak Mudra

जल शामक मुद्राJala Śāmaka Mudrāజల శామక ముద్ర

The little finger is folded to the base of the thumb. Where Varun Mudra moistens, this one dries: for swelling, congestion, watery eyes, excess mucus and fluid that will not move.

Jal Shamak Mudra

Meaning of the name

The seal that pacifies water. Śāmaka means to quiet, to subdue, to bring something excessive back into measure.

How to practise

  1. 1

Fold the little finger so its tip presses the base of the thumb.

  2. 2

Lay the thumb over it with light, steady pressure.

  3. 3

Extend the index, middle and ring fingers.

  4. 4

Practise seated or lying down with the legs slightly elevated if there is leg swelling.

  5. 5

Hold for 15 minutes, twice a day, while symptoms last.

Benefits

  • Reduces swelling in the legs, ankles and face
  • Dries excess mucus in sinus congestion, runny nose and wet cough
  • Helps watery eyes and excessive salivation
  • Reduces excessive sweating
  • Eases the heavy, waterlogged feeling in the monsoon and in damp climates

What happens in the nervous system

Fluid balance is governed by the kidneys under hormonal control, with the sympathetic nervous system regulating renal blood flow. Practices that lower sympathetic drive improve renal perfusion; combined with the mechanical help of elevating the legs, that is a reasonable account of why swelling reduces during a quiet, seated practice.
