Kubera Mudra

कुबेर मुद्राKubera Mudrāకుబేర ముద్ర

Index and middle fingertips join the thumb while the ring and little fingers fold into the palm. Three elements gathered, two set aside. Used for focused intention and, very practically, for clearing the sinuses.

Kubera Mudra

Meaning of the name

Named for Kubera, keeper of wealth. Wealth here means gathered resource — attention collected onto one aim rather than scattered across many.

How to practise

  1. 1

Join the tips of the index finger, middle finger and thumb.

  2. 2

Fold the ring and little fingers into the palm.

  3. 3

Make the shape with both hands and hold them at the level of the chest, or rest them on the thighs.

  4. 4

Form a clear, single intention and state it inwardly three times.

  5. 5

For sinus congestion, press the joined fingertips gently either side of the nose while breathing slowly.

Benefits

  • Clears blocked sinuses and relieves sinus headache
  • Sharpens focus and helps in seeing a task through to completion
  • Reduces the scattered feeling of having too many things half-done
  • Improves confidence before an interview, exam or negotiation
  • Supports prostate health in men over fifty

What happens in the nervous system

Direct pressure over the maxillary sinuses either side of the nose stimulates branches of the trigeminal nerve and encourages drainage through mechanical means — the same reason facial massage helps a blocked head. The focusing effect is less mysterious than it sounds: any deliberate, repeated physical ritual attached to an intention improves follow-through, and the hands are the most available ritual we have.
